背景介紹：
這是根據一則真實的故事所改編的歌曲，故事發生的正確年份並不可考。
在一輛開往邁阿密南方的公車上，有一位因為開了芭樂票而入監服刑三年的男子忐忑不安的對著司機說：司機司機，等一下快到US17號時，請你幫我看一下鎮上最大的一稞橡樹上面有沒有繫著絲帶，黃色的絲帶好嗎？
司機很好奇的問他前因後果。
男子羞澀的回答：我因為犯了一些錯，被囚禁了三年，可是我不知道我的妻子是否願意等我，為了確定這點，我寫了一封信給她，如果他仍然要我的話，那就在鎮上最大的那稞橡樹上繫上一條黃色的絲帶，如果我沒看到那條絲帶，代表她已經不再等我，那麼我就會安靜的離開此地。
車子駛近目標之前，忽然間全車的人都歡呼了起來，原來她的妻子不但原諒了他，而且在樹上繫了上百條的黃絲帶～
這個故事後來被公車司機投書給通信社（即報社），報導出來之後被這首歌曲的詞曲創作者Irwin Levine與 L. Russell Brown 知道後決定把故事寫成歌曲。
1973年2月這首歌曲初版，2個月以後幾乎已經成為大家津津樂道的佳話。總計全球大賣了超過700萬張專輯！
翻唱者眾，但以Dawn feat. Tony Orlando的版本最聞名。
故事的主角是一位因倒閉破產而被判服刑三年的男子, 在出獄前夕, 他寫了一封信給在喬治亞州的妻子...
喬治亞州是美國南方的一州, 原文歌名應該是是"ole", 而非"old", 所以這首歌曲正確名稱應該是 : Tie a yellow ribbon around the ole oak tree ; 因為 ole 是 old 的口語字, 在美國屬於南方口語發音, 應該是美國南部的方言...
